Reviews for The Passion of Marie Romanov
“Thoroughly researched, beautifully written, brilliantly imagined, this is historical fiction at its best. From the first page the reader is as much a captive as poor Marie. Don't miss it.”

A page-turner in the best sense
By Nina Swift
I was mesmerized. Of course I knew the end, but it started at the perfect place and I loved the opening and closing chapters from the young guard's point of view. Throughout, there are such beautiful details of how they lived in each stage, including before the fall - and then the journeys, the houses, the whole downward spiral, with hearbreaking bright spots - how they learn to ask for less and less and yet keep hoping that somehow this will end well. Marie is a great narrator and you see more and more complexity in her, and in other characters as she writes about them, especially her father. The details of the end are horrifying and completely human as told from the boy's perspective.
It really is a page-turner in the best sense - no gimmicks, just a great, suspenseful story, a fascinating world, and a tremendously compelling narrator.

Excellent!

Having a long time interest in these times and this family, I can't say how impressed with Ms. Roses novel. Factually correct with all the humanity and emotion woven through it--emotions you experienced with Marie and the family. I had to put it down several times, take a break and a breath, only to pick it back up again.
I took the day off today with plans to get out for a much needed road trip, meaning to put it aside and head out. By two in the afternoon I had finished the book and had already rationalized that I'd go tomorrow--when it was sunnier...because I knew I couldn't go until I finished it.
The author mentions that on July 18, 2018 is the 100th year anniversary of their deaths. Oh, how I'd love to go.
My recommendation? Absolutely, it weaves all the facts together in the style of a personal journal and brings them to beautiful and painful life.

History come alive!

Laura Rose writes with passion, authority, and high style. Here she pens a fascinating tale, a real page-turner, and uncovers some of the lesser known aspects, often horrific, of the Romanov story. She recounts with bracing clarity and immediacy the events surrounding the executions of the Romanov family, and, through her vividly-drawn portrait of Marie, sheds surprising new light on this iconic history. History buffs, lovers of new fiction and anyone who's ever expressed interest in Anatasia, Marie's more famous younger sister, will be pleased and satisfied by this substantial, solidly-crafted new work. Highly recommended.
