Marie arrived at the Ipatiev Mansion with her mother and father under frightening conditions. They had to leave Alexei behind, in the care of the other sisters Olga, Tatiana and Anastasia and most of their staff in Tobolsk. Their train was seized by militant Ural Bolsheviks and they were imprisoned much more rigidly and under more serious threat in the mansion re-named The House of Special Purpose. They never left alive, save for restricted walks in the tiny garden
