A large part of their tragedy is that the Romanovs were an unusually loving family. In that time, it was not the custom for a father, let alone a Tsar to be so affectionate and present with his children. Nicholas was demonstrative and kind- under the most trying circumstances. When he returned from the devastating abdication, he walked into a palace filled with his very sick children- all had the measles. Instead of keeping a distance, or brooding over his own situation, Nicholas donned a smock and was hands on, helping nurse them back to health. The family liked to snuggle and photos attest to this...When he realized he had lost his empire, Nicholas actually said he was glad, that now he could spend more time with his family. He devoted himself to his four lovely daughters and his handsome fragile son. And of course, his passion for Alexandra is fully documented. They remained lovers until the end.
