Of course they were four sisters- but one usually held the camera. There are therefore thousands of pictures of three Romanov sisters in various combinations. It seems to me that Marie or Anastasia often held the black box camera though they all took turns. Reviewing the albums, I am struck by the before and after- Before the revolution- the beauty and luxury- ermine stoles and lacy batiste dresses- After the revolution- knit caps and shabby sweaters and dull heavy coats. Yet there is no word that the girls resented their material losses. What mattered most was staying together. Here they are shown- with ermine stoles- ermine allowed to be worn only by royal or imperial personages. Next a new (to me) photo of the shabby three sisters- one of the last taken of them in captivity in Tobolsk.
