Summer 1916 found the Romanovs basking in their Standardt cruise, dancing on deck, alighting on Finnish Islands and also picnicking on banks of the Dneper River. It was the last of their golden, warm and loving idylls- for the next summer 1917 they were incarcerated at Tsarskoe Selo, moved to Tobolsk in August, and the following summer of 1918, brutally murdered. How sweet that they had so much time and made such loving use of it- perhaps as the closest and most caring of royal and imperial families.
Tsar Nicholas when he lost the empire, reflected that he would now be able to do what he really wished- spend more time with his family. He had always adored them and contrary to the custom of the times, was a hands-on parent, carrying and caring for his children.
