When I was writing my novel, I instinctively chose Marie as my main subject and the narrator. Why? I was drawn to her sensitive beautiful face, her level gaze...All the sisters - Olga, Tatiana and Anastasia were so appealing but I always returned to Marie. She was endearing and modest, even about being teased regarding her weight- The others called her "Fat Bow Wow" during a baby fat stage. I loved her sense of humor- when she confessed she used the Tsar's swimming pool- and his toilet! She spoke to me with her own writing and her exquisite watercolors of flowers. Her experience was also more extended than her sisters- She alone traveled with her parents to Ekaterinburg and shared the full 78 days of captivity- the others joined them later. Marie crossed the frozen rivers and rode the awful cart, trying to shield her mother...The allusions to Marie having a romance with a guard were intriguing...She was a known flirt- and why shouldn't she be? She was beautiful and open and friendly- and she had just turned 19...
