Tatiana after typhus 1913 short hair contaminated waterAlexandra with Tatiana post typhusOften, photos of Tatiana with her head shaved or showing her with cropped hair are mistakenly identified as 1917, when all the girls heads were shaved after measles. It is an easy mistaken conclusion as Tatiana's head was shaved twice- The first time after a near fatal bout with typhus (the disease that killed Anne Frank and her sister Margot much later as World War II ended) Typhus was an often fatal illness in that time. It is said Tatiana took a sip of an orange drink at the 1913 Centennial celebration and fell seriously ill.  She may also  have become ill from the drink but not from typhus- She caught typhus from a bug bite. Typhus is spread by insects- most often lice bites. She might have died save for the constant devoted attention from her mother, father, Dr.Botkin and we can deduce the combined support of her deeply loving family. There are several photos which document her recovery. Her father also had suffered typhus as a young man and also was nursed by Alexandra.
